First Container Terminal (FCT, located in the Big Port of St. Petersburg, part of Global Ports, Russia’s leading operator of marine container terminals, part of Delo Group) has modernised its own railway front and increased its length by 20% from 2,661 to 3,179 metres. The total usable length of railway tracks at the terminal is now 2,865 metres. After the modification, FCT will be able to handle trains with a length of 71 conventional wagons without any additional breakdown. The modification of the railway front will increase the throughput capacity of the four FCT's tracks by 8% to 273,000 TEU per year, simplify the accessibility of the truck handling front by reducing the load on railway crossings and increase the speed of train handling by reducing shunting operations associated with the breakdown of train by Russian Railways.
FCT is modernising the railway front against the backdrop of the consistent recovery of container throughput on the Russian Baltics and the growing load on its own railway infrastructure. In addition, the need for track lengthening is determined by the trend to increase the number of wagons in cargo trains. The previous track length allowed to accept trains of no more than 57 wagons. < Back to list
