Global Ports Implements Intelligent Driver Fatigue Monitoring System

Global Ports (part of the Delo Group) has rolled out a video-based monitoring system for terminal tractor drivers at its terminals in Russia’s North-West. The intelligent video analytics system helps prevent accidents caused by common risk factors such as driver fatigue and inattention when operating specialized machinery.

The system continuously monitors drivers’ condition and identifies key signs of reduced concentration, including prolonged glances away from the road, drowsiness, yawning, and eyes remaining closed for longer than a normal blink. It also detects safety violations such as mobile phone use, failure to wear a seatbelt, and smoking.

The system uses two in-cab cameras connected to an analytics module powered by a continuously learning neural network. When an unsafe condition is detected, the system issues an audible alert to draw the driver’s attention. If fatigue poses a safety risk, the driver is required to stop operating the vehicle. Footage of the incident is automatically saved to a server for further analysis.

“The system has proven effective: pilot results showed a 16% reduction in distracted driving over the three-month period, while the total number of violations involving terminal tractor operations was reduced by 50%,” said Rodion Pogorelov, Technical Director at Global Ports. “Port operations are demanding, so compliance with work and rest schedules remains a key factor in ensuring safety and maintaining drivers’ alertness. That is why our terminals provide employees with regular breaks, as well as designated sports and rest areas.”

The video monitoring system has been installed on 103 terminal tractors in the Global Ports fleet, operating at Petrolesport, First Container Terminal, and Moby Dik at the Big Port of St. Petersburg, Ust-Luga Container Terminal at the deep-water port of Ust-Luga, and Yanino Logistics Park inland terminal in the Leningrad Region.
