TransContainer Expands Its Network of Container Transshipment Points from Open-Box Wagons to Flatcars in Western Siberia

PJSC TransContainer has expanded its network of facilities for transshipping containers from open-box wagons to container flatcars on the West Siberian Railway (WSR), facilitating the transportation of cargo from the Russian Far East. The Company has commenced operations at three additional railway stations: Moshkovo (Novosibirsk Region), Biryulinskaya, and Belovo (Kuzbass). In addition, following a prolonged suspension, container transshipment operations have resumed at Tomsk-I Station.

The Company’s network now comprises nine such facilities. In addition to the newly added locations, container transshipment operations are carried out at Kleshchikha and Chemskoy stations in Novosibirsk, Kemerovo-Sortirovochnoye and Novokuznetsk-Vostochny stations in Kuzbass, as well as at Tomsk-Gruzovoy Station.

In the first half of 2026, TransContainer increased the volume of container transshipment from open-box wagons on the WSR network by almost 3.6 times year-on-year, reaching 46 thousand TEU. From January to June, the Company dispatched 324 container trains, which is also 3.6 times higher than the figure recorded a year earlier.

The use of open-box wagons for container transportation is less technologically efficient than transportation on container flatcars. However, the need to transport containers in open-box wagons is driven by an imbalance in trade flows caused by low volumes of cargo moving towards Far Eastern ports, while there is heavy traffic of containerized cargo moving in the western direction. As a result, the region faces a shortage of flatcars available for outbound container shipments. Consequently, almost half of all containers dispatched from the region are transported in open-box wagons. The development of a network of transshipment facilities makes it possible to accelerate container handling and reduce delivery times amid uneven cargo flows.
