Global Ports launches training program for women to operate port cranes
Global Ports Group (part of Delo Group), Russia's leading operator of container and multipurpose marine terminals, has launched an internal retraining program for female tallymen to operate harbor cranes and other heavy-duty terminal equipment.
The program is designed to give more professional development opportunities for women working in operations of the stevedoring business and expand Global Ports’ talent pool amid a growing shortage of qualified specialists in port professions traditionally considered male in the industry.
In the first six months of 2023, 12 female employees were retrained from tallymen to crane operators and port machines drivers at the Group's three terminals: Petrolesport, First Container Terminal (PLP and FCT, located in St. Petersburg), and Vostochnaya Stevedoring Company (VSC, located in the port of Vostochny in Primorsky Krai). The retraining course amounted to 240 hours and included both theoretical and practical training. Six employees at VSC have already passed the exams, received crane operator's licenses and started working on various types of cargo handling vehicles. In St. Petersburg, the first group of retrained staff will start working independently upon completing the course and passing the qualification exam in July.
Global Ports terminals use various types of berth and yard equipment, including RTG and RMG cranes, STS cranes, mobile harbor cranes, reachstackers and straddle carriers.
Today, over 3,000 employees work at Global Ports’ companies across Russia. Women make up 29% of the group’s workforce. The percentage of women in the administrative segment is more than twice as high as in the operations. The operations employ 25% of women, while in the administrative segment women make up 62% of staff. < Back to list
